Default 73 Won't start

Ok am I over looking the obvious?? Pulled the 73 out to change the oil and time the engine and adjust the carb. when I shut it down it ran on for a bit before it quit(I know the timing is off that causes this). When I disconnected, my timing light from the power source which was the positive side of the alternator, I got careless and the alligator clip, I used to connect to the terminal touched the back of the alternator which caused an arc, I can see a burn mark on the back of the alternator where it made contact. Now the car at first would just crank and not start, so thought maybe the battery was weak, charged the battery to full charge checked it with my multi meter and it indeed has a full charge. Tried to start the car again and when I turned the key got absolutely nothing, I mean its like its a totally dead battery... checked battery again shows 12.8 volts, what am I over looking??

Seems likely you burned out one of the usable links. Odd that you were able to crank it initially. Do any of your lights come on?

No lights and even the ignition buzzer does not work.... If it is a fusible link where would it be located?? Just rechecked battery voltage and it holding steady at 12.7v.

The main fusible links are right at your Horn Relay on the 73. You can also check the wiring at the Starter. Good luck!

The thermal fuse by the horn relay is good... However when I checked the one on the starter it looks suspicious to me... although its not burnt through there is a swelling pointed out by the arrows.. any thoughts on this??

Dead as a doornail....nasty!

If you can't find a replacement...probe the wire with a needle and a AVO meter and cut out the tiny burnt bits and resolder and reseal...check continuity again.
Obviously a replacement is called for...It's weak now.

Good luck, that sucks.
