It's looking like the cost to rebuild my distributor is more than I want to spend right now, so I may opt for the HEI. If I do, I know I will need new plug wires, but will I need new plugs as well? I've purchased plugs, but I'm not sure they will work with HEI instead of points. Should I buy plugs for a '74, since it is HEI equipped?

Thanks,
Keith

Plugs are fine...but open the gap to .040.......
What is you budget? https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...040959&jsn=443

If you do go HEI......you will have to run a 12 gauge wire the the fuse box that is switchable.......failure to do so will overheat this wire and cause big problems down the road............also whatever you buy is going to have crap curve in it and cheap china vacuum canister...........And you are going to pay two bills for an HEI that runs the Tach Drive anyway.....

I'm not guessing at the moment, I have a cheap distributor that is not a tach drive, so regardless what is causing my car to not run properly, I want to replace the distributor to get my tach working again. Now I'm trying to decide if I rebuild my old distributor or replace, and if I replace, do I go with points or HEI.

The quote I received to rebuild my distributor from TI Specialties was 7+ hours at $75 plus parts. I would like to try and stay closer to $200. My motor has a knock and is going to need to be rebuilt soon, so I don't want to drop $500 on a distributor.

My reason for thinking about going HEI is to avoid having to replace the points in the future, so I can focus on continuing to replace all of the other 45 yr old parts that need replacing, like the PS. Although, I really would like to try and keep it original.

The Rock Auto one might be a solution, as it's at my price range.

Thanks guys,
Keith

I just purchased that distributor. Thanks Jebby. After I install it, I see if I still face the same issues with the car. If so, I'll check for fuel and then check the voltage at the coil. For now, I'm eliminating the issue of having the wrong distributor in the car. Regardless if this correct the problem, I will have the right part and my tach will now work.

Might be next weekend before I get to put it back together, but will report back.

Thanks again to all who have replied.

Going back stock is a good plan! You will still need to set the dwell and timing......

UPDATE

The car is currently running and has been driven further than it previously had been when the issues surfaced. I replaced the distributor, as I wanted the original tach drive in it. This took a little time, but I managed to get it in and timed. Then the tach worked and it was running. After a short test drive, the same issues surfaced. I decide to try a new coil and it seems to have corrected the problem. So for now, she's back on the road.

Well, sort of. Now I have a starter or solenoid issue, as during my last drive I went to crank it and nothing happened the first two times I turned the ignition. After banging my head on the seat I gave it one more try and the starter engaged. I had noticed lately that when I turn the ignition switch there seems to be a 1/2 second or so delay before it spins the starter, so I thought this could be on my next to-do list.

So hopefully I'll get a starter in it tomorrow night and finish installing the chrome heat shields (nightmare). Then on to the next item on the list. As long as I can drive it, I'm happy.

Thanks again for everyone's help,
Keith
