I am in the process of having my 79 painted. We are having an issue where there are no visible cracks in the primer, but once we start to apply a second coat, cracks show up 24-36 hours later. This is happening in the roof between the T-tops and rear window. Any thoughts on a cause?
They have a glaze you can use to fill the cracks and it works . You are lucky it is the primer, not the base coat. I would fill the cracks and wait a week before i shot a base coat .
Based on how deep that crack looks I would say there is WAY too much primer on it. IIRC primer shrinks a little while it cures which when applied in that thickness will cause cracking.
I am definitely no expert, I am just doing reading on this as I am about to begin the bodywork phase of my project but my understanding is that if you need that thickness of primer, you should be using filler to smooth everything out first and then apply MUCH thinner layers of primer.
Maybe Dub or one of the other experienced bodymen will chime in shortly.
