Subject line pretty much says it - do you prefer a Vette in time-capsule condition even if it's a smog-motor boat anchor or one that's had the performance enhanced?

This question gets asked six or seven times a year. It's a matter of personal choice, but the way you word your question shows your opinion. Why does an original car have to be a time capsule or a smog motor boat anchor?

My car is a rubber bumper beast and a 75 as well. When restored in 98 some body mods and engine upgrades were included in the process. These changes and the upgrades I have added increased the fun factor and the value of my ride. I would not modify an NCRS car or a show quality car but I think if power or astetic mods make you happy go for it and have fun with your toy.

Not at all trying to imply an opinion as to what anyone should prefer, just reflecting the reality that certain years were pretty quick out of the factory and certain years were a lot less so.

It's a personal preference. Me, I'm a hot rodder who just happens to have a Corvette. So, performance rules for me.

Mine wasn't pristine when I got the car so I had no problems choosing to modify and improve it to suit my (Performance) tastes.

If it was an as factory delivered car in great shape I'd most likely have left it alone and found something else to tinker with........my $.02

It depends. If a car has 15 miles and has never been touched, leave it. But, if you're like me, my project when I got it was already messed with so I decided to modify and improve.

I don't think he meant that you were trolling the forum. I think he meant that questions pop up like this a lot and they don't contribute a whole lot to the forum other than going on for 3-4 days and then disappear down the rabbit hole that is the forum.

My '72 vert was an old show car, modified tail lights flares, etc.....so it was a PURRfect candidate for my hotrodder inclinations....

BBhood scoop, custom grill, small openings in headlights, lo profile bulbs,200 4r for the overdrive, late shark TT wheel/column, custom interior color combo, DPFI , aluminum rad/dual fans, ATF cooler, upgraded a/c cond, serp drive, roller engine, alum. heads, 336 rear, O ring brake pistons, Hydro boost brakes, alum m/cyl, lowered driver seat, firewall pushed forward and glassed in--pedals further forward, get my knees off the wheel...., power windows added, Hard top was sold off, as not needed in FLORIDA, '89 vette wheels, 275/50 REAR, 255/50 front, removable cross member with auto trans change, Hurst shifter rod, 8 ball on top, just not cool without it......This is about 1/2 the mods.......see pix below....

ps My blue Boat Anchor C-3 gets 26mpg on 89 octane regular.... what is your idea of PERFORMANCE?????

I love original corvettes but also think some upgrades like tires , aluminium radiator ,adjustable rear struts ,s/s park brake kit will improve your driving experience with these older cars .

I think we'd see the owners of the more valuable collectible cars skew toward the originality side, and the less collectible plain Jane model owners skewing toward doing more modding. It doesn't hurt the value of a factory auto base model 78 for instance, but a numbers matching chrome bumper car is worth a lot more in original form.

I love the originality of my car, otherwise I would have bought a newer car. However, speed is the drug so I'll sacrifice originality (to a degree) for performance or personal like/dislike any day....
