I'm installing a new harness on my 71. The connector for the transmission kick down passes through a grommet on the firewall along with the oil pressurei line in the same hole. Now I can't see assembly line workers taking the connector apart, passing the wires thru the grommet and reassemble the connector and attach to the kd switch. I'm thinking of cutting a slot in the grommet, insert the wires and oil line and then insert the grommet. Is this how is was done on the line? Is there a better way to do this?
I believe that cutting the grommet is the way it was done. I replaced my speedo and tach cable and ended up cutting both grommets. It made it a lot easier since on my 68 the cables screw on the back of the tach and speedo.

all of mine had slits, not sure if they were from the factory but they appeared to be. A little WD on the rubber will help you to get the grommet back in he firewall if its a tight fit

I worked at the GM division (Packard Electric Division) that made this harness. The wires were placed in a mold die in an injection molding machine and the rubber grommet compound was formed and cured around the wires. Slitting the grommet and then using sealant when you are done is the only practical way to service this.
