Default whats the fix?

Got the 80 on the road today, Seems there is some sort of a problem in the rear suspension area. Being by myself I could't look under the car to see what's happening. As the car is put in forward gear [ automatic ] the rear of the car drops down like a couple inches. I raises back up in reverse. Seems to drive OK , never drove a Vette before so what is going on?

Horse power? this is a stock 1980 , Hell the speedometer only goes to 85 . I'm not talking about hitting the throttle , I'm saying that when it is put in drive it feels like the rear end is rotating . I also noticed today theres a big clunk , not u joint type clunk when I pulled it down into 2nd rear going down the street about 20 mph. Could the rear end center section be loose?

A small amount of squat is normal. But if you're hearing a clunk, then you have something loose/broken. I'd check the rubber differential mount. It's at the front of the diff, above the drive shaft.

Yes that clunk sound is a give away (usually) to a worn diff snubber bushing.

As to the squat , yes it's normal , but yours could be exaggerated by worn shock absorbers

I jacked it up and tried to take look at that front snubber . Couldn't see the condition of it. Can't see it at all. The other bushings holding the aluminum cross member looked OK ,spring bushings have some cracking but not falling apart. I guess I'll have to set it up on jack stands and catch someone walking down the street to put in gear while I'm under it to see whats happening . LOL The shocks look newer but while i'm under it I' ll pull them to check the condition.

I read in another posting that it was not a good idea to run the car in gear with the suspension hanging. . Is there a place to put additional jack stands under the suspension along with the frame jack stands ?

All automatic C3's squat when put into drive. Please don't put that car in gear while on jackstands.

Exactly, autos have a slight drop when putting into drive. Your diff snubber could be worn or broken off. How's your idle? A higher than normal can make it drop even more than normal. As others said, do not put it in gear with the axles hanging down.
