i am looking forward to buy a beautiful 1969 427 C3. My only concern is to identify or proof the engine. Is it a 427? Is it from 69? Is it a L36 with 390 hp?
Any idea witch engine this is ?
That shows the assembly plant, date and engine suffix. The casting number is usually found on the driver side rear of the block where the bell housing connects.
JA is the suffix code for a 1967 L71 435Hp 427ci engine. Check the engine cast number and casting date code to confirm, The block casting number will be on the rear flange of the engine on the drivers side. The casting date code is on the passenger side of the block by the exhaust manifold.
It doesn't look to have a vin stamp so it looks to be an over the counter crate motor.
It could be a very valuable engine. A real 1967 over the counter L71 without a vin stamp would be very desirable engine to people restoring or trying to fake a 1967 L71, but its not the original engine for a 1969 L36 Corvette.
Ok , so I will have a look at that. In this case the suffix is "JA" right ? I found 427cu 1967 Corvette 435hp and 396cu 1969 Chevelle 325hp corresponding to this suffix. Both would not match to the actual car. Or is that not the way how those codes work? What kind of information comes with the casting code?
Yeah looking into it further, Chevrolet did reuse the JA suffix code. The engine casting number will tell you the approximate time frame of when the engine was cast and confirm if it is a 427 or a 396 block.
