Your top tip is not a good tip... you're not going to gain mpg switching from a correctly-tuned Q-Jet to the so-called "Edelbrock" 650, which is nothing more than an old Carter AFB. GM discontinued that AFB carb (aka, "Edelbrock Performer") in 1966 in favor of the Q-Jet, because the Q-Jet outperformed it in all areas, including emissions and mileage.

The biggest improvement you can make is to correctly set up your timing curve and assure that your vacuum advance is functional and correctly hooked up. Make sure your carb is not one of the dreaded "commercially rebuilt" carbs - if it is, it's messed up, and will produce terrible mileage and performance. If your Q-Jet carb is correct and original, it will produce decent mileage if set up to spec. Verify it after setting up your timing correctly. E-mail me if you need instructions.

The other thing is, regardless of what you were told/think about the motor, do a compression test before you put any money into trying to improve the gas mileage. My 79 came with a bunch of bills for a rebuilt engine, including pictures of it being rebuilt, but compression on #1 cylinder is down 25-30 psi from the others and that cylinder had a spark plug coated in oily black goo compared to the other relatively clean plugs.

A common problem on these cars that I had on mine, was the centrifugal advance mechanism is gummed up with dirt and no longer moves freely. Take off the distributor cap and work the centrifugal advance mechanism by hand several times to loosen it up.

Are you really getting that kind of mileage with a 496 ??
I have a 72 with stock 350 zq3 that I was going to change out with a 454 I bought last year. I was considering stroking the 454 but got put off due to ceazy fuel prices. So you can get that kind of highway mileage with a overdrive plus efi ? seriously

yep I know, I figured I'd get a reply like Rescue Rogers cause I just can't see ~23+ on highway, 10 to 12 mpg around town. I wish that was possible, the car would actually have some range for my next cross country !! lol
Thinking eddlebrock pro flow 4 efi for the #s matching not only better mpg but tuning on the fly

I got 21 mpg once. Did it by NASCAR style drafting. I won't try that again!

I totally agree.....EVERYTHING cost money, there is NOTHING free. In my past, even when I was poor, I spent money to have fun. Its just what it is, and what its for. IF you don't have money to spend on a Corvette, you probably should not even own it.....just give up. I have the money now in my life to spend on it, and I STILL worry about spending it.....but as I get older, it gets more clear than ever that the ONLY purpose of money is to enjoy it.....there is no other worthy purpose. So, you just have to stop sweating it, and just spend spend spend. I know I am. My 69 Corvette project is eating money FAST,.....but you either do it, or get rid of it.....nothing in between works. Nothing.

Seriously.....you have to decide. You either spend the money to make it everything it can be, and bring you the most satisfaction it can......OR, you decide you can't justify it, and sell it. The place in between is a lose / lose proposition......because then all you do it put less money into it, and then get less out of it. If I get to that point.....the car(s) are gone. All or nothing.

If that's true why are gas prices higher in Canada too? What did Democrats do to raise gas prices here?

i mean
why be fuel efficient when you can just ditch fuel completely and "fill it up" for like $12, if that
just saying....

Hi Priya, THe answer to your question is two fold. Strap on your Tin Foil Hat because Im taking you all to Oz.
The US Dims didnt directly raise your prices, they did here in January of 2020, and they have been climbing since then. Once they let Puddinhead invaded Ukraine they started to rise everywhere. Im sure YOur PM with his COVID views arent helping the matter in your countries supply chain but lets get back to out countrys biggest mistake. Biden and his inept crew published the news that Russia would be invading and did nothing to stop it for weeks, SAID TO THE WORLD that the US would not do anything to stop it, then after the fact stated it was a minor incursion, then admitted it was a war and did some lame sanctions. Russia only supplies 10 percent of the worlds oil and it never stopped flowing. OPEC sets the oil prices because they are the worlds largest exporter , now that Biden shut down US oil exports and now imports it, and they saw a chance to slow the flow and raise the worlds prices. THat is how the US screwed you folks up north,

There is absolutely no reason for the worlds high prices but the US has a complete Government of idiots running the show down here and our prices are our own fault. You think this dumpster fire is bad, it will get worse 2 more times. Just before midterm elections and again for the 2024 elections. We will be back in masks and they will come at us with a small pox pandemic started in the Ukraine war or some such bullshit....Welcome top the New World Order...Rule by fear and incompetence
