Hello. I have purchased a 1971 Lt1. The car was used as a tow car for a drag car I also have, the car is in good condition 1 owner with just under 60,000 miles. It sat sealed up for several years. Has the usual musty smell which I’m cleaning up. Today’s question is on cleaning the seats. I’m having a really tough time with the dark stains in the picture. Any suggestions for removing these?
I would try making a paste out of Oxy-Clean and a small amount of water; mix so it is somewhat runny, but not 'wet'. Smooth it over the ComfortWeave surfaces and let it sit there for 20-30 minutes. Wipe it off, rather than rinsing and soaking all the foam underneath. Then use a damp cloth to wipe the residue off.
Those dark stains are probably dark colored mold. You have to kill it, or it will return.
Hey Pvirg, cool cars - I've been watching your progress for several months, and I'm impressed!
If I had to guess, since the car was used as a tow car the dark stains could very likely be greasy/oily from getting in/out of the car after wrenching on the drag car. Many who have done much drag racing have given the tow car, no matter how nice, to less than optimal treatment. (I campaigned SS/D and MP for a bit 'back int the day', and I'm guilty. :-) ).
If it were me, I'd start by guessing that it just needs a good, and careful cleaning. I'd use a good vinyl/leather cleaner - depending on the material - and do it carefully and in phases. I would never start with anything abrasive, as that could quickly end up ruining what is most likely really good seats. I'd also begin by testing some less conspicuous areas so you are sure you aren't removing any dye from the cleaner you're using. I've had really good luck with Zaino leather/vinyl cleaner if that helps.
Take your time and my guess is that you'll have some very pristine looking seats when you're done. Have fun, and keep us informed!
If the stains are just oil/grease, Simple Green is fine. If it's mildew/mold, you need to KILL IT, and that takes something stronger. Bleach is best...but it wouldn't be good on the vinyl. Hence, my Oxy-Clean alternative. Good luck, either way....
