I made my own sidepiepes as well- ended up with 4" 304 SS that fits .
The trick is to use ½ square tube and mount the covers on it- giving you another ½" of clearance.
The thing I recommend is getting some PVC from your local hardware store and use it test fit first.
Spaced out ½" Test fit...no bailing wire was used in the actual mounting.... Polished up...wife was out of town... Tip & muffler connected using v band clamps- can adjust as necessary.

I had to fad up some mounting clamps. Pulled the stand off brackets from some old burned up heat shield wrap I had and the the rest cost me less than 10.00 from local hardware store.
