Surprised the car needed new weatherstrip only after 2 years.

To put this bill in perspective, below is an excerpt from a United States Census Bureau report, dated Dec 1978, on U.S. income during 1977.

"The median money income of households in the United States rose to $13,570 in 1977, a 7-percent increase from the 1976 median of $12,690. However, almost all of this increase was eroded by rising prices."

Weather strip back then was real bad, could literally fall apart pretty easy
Maybe it came apart on removal?

I think weatherstrip was fairly high quality back in the day. It's hard to say what the reason was for renewing it. Maybe a portion of it was damaged or needed to be removed due to the bodywork and painting or repainting being done on this two year old car.
