Default spare tire lock.

My key will not turn the lock and checking the price of a new one is crazy. Whats so special about them? Anyway anyone have a alternative replacement suggestion ?

I just took the lock off, had no key also, it is just to prevent the spare from being stolen
I carry no spare, for now

I didn't have a key so I picked the lock and tossed it into the parts box and never missed it. The interesting thing was the car still had it's original spare, so I swapped that out.

I wouldn't bother with the lock. You would have to be dumb and then some to bring the proper size wrench, crawl under the back of a C3 and steal an old spare that could be upwards of 50 years old. Nobody has ever stolen the spare from under my pickup and unlike my C3, it sits outside all the time. The new lock might be worth more than the tire it's protecting....

Its really not hard to remove the entire piece that is bolted to the frame that the lock attaches to. Once off, the lock is pretty easy to remove from the rod. If you do a search on this forum there are plenty of threads that tell you how to do it. It also, easy to remove the cylinder from the lock when its off the bolt. On the cylinder there should be a 4 digit code. Take that code to any decent locksmith and they can cut you a new key from that code, it shouldn't cost much, but before you do that try spraying the whole thing down with some WD40 or something similar to see if maybe its just a little jammed up from age.
