Base engines came with a WR 4 spd and 336 gears, with a 27" tire that sounds about right. Some opted for the "highway gear" which was 308, but those engines didn't have the torque say a BB has and 1st gear could be sluggish.

So you have a normal setup, drive it. It's not worth putting in a OT trans or even gear change if you don't do a lot of highway driving. Those engines would last about 150k miles sometimes more before a rebuild was in order. Yes there were exceptions above and below that range mostly on how the car was driven and maintained.

Great, thanks. I dont do a lot of highway miles and motors been rebuilt so I'm sure it would sit happily all day long at 2500 rpm if required. Cheers

My 69 has 336 gears, 27" tires and is precisely at 2500 rpm at 60. Run up to 70 at 2900. Let people in Subaru's going 80 enjoy a nice look at a REAL car!!!

So this last weekend coming back from the down pour at Oreilly's car show in St.Paul. At 60 mph with my 6 speed and 4:10 gears about 1500 rpm. 23 mpg. I put it in 4th a couple time think about old times. Back then we didn't know any better.v
