Default Revs at 60 mph?

Hi all. My 72 SB is doing 2500 rpm at 60 mph. Does this sound right? It's a 4 speed. ......and yes, I'm in 4th 😀.

You probably have a 3.36 to 3.55 rear axle ratio (need to know what tire diameter you have to know which).

Thanks for feedback. It just feels like I'm reving the ***** off it if I want to go any faster. 70 mph at 3000 rpm roughly. I know, I know, ... drive it like you stole it 😀

I'm at 3700 at 80 for about an hour most weekends. Most shows or the beach are up the highway. ITs how they were built to run back in the day. Kinda loud, kinda uses more fuel than it should, but REALLY fun. Its not going to blow up but it wears on the motor a bit. If it really bothers you its time for a 5 or 6 speed. Its the only option other than parking it.

Enjoy it while you can

Thanks for feedback. Good comments 😀. You're right, it's all about enjoying them eh. No fun sitting in the garage.

Running at 3000 rpm (or higher) on the highway is not a functional problem....but it does wear the engine more than if it were turning 2000 revs. That's the main reason I installed an overdrive transmission....to save the engine--and to make life more comfortable inside the cockpit during longer highway rides.

Thanks heaps. I only sit on 2500rpm as that's the speed limit here. That's certainly not worth cost of getting overdrive fitted eh. Plus want to keep it factory 😀

I'd be willing to bet you're used to only modern vehicles with overdrive transmissions, so you're not used to a vehicle having so many rpms on the highway. On the highway in my 79 im typically between 3500 and 4000 rpms for hours. As others have said, maybe not the most ideal situation, but it is what it is. For the record, you can install and overdrive trans in your car without any permanent modifications, so it's completely reversible to stock if you were so inclined.

Youre bang on. My daily is sitting at 1400 rpm at 100kph so I take your point on board 😀
I baby my Vette as it's almost 50 years old but forget its actually a sports/muscle car at the end of the day.

You should go out and give it a good ride above 3000 every shift just to let it knows you care. They actually like it a little rough.....

if you like that try 4000 rpm...you'll be surprised how a middle aged car can still perform

FYI...70 MPH is 2830 RPM's for my 1968. Has 3.08 ring and pinion, 4S with 1:1 fourth gear ratio and 25.6 inch diameter tires. If it really bothers you change the rear diff gearing to a lower number ratio however taking off smoothly in first will more difficult.

Funny you should say that as it is currently hard to get an easy smooth take off in first. Do you know what that would be? Once moving everything is smooth as.

I havent taken it over 4000 rpm but it certainly has some power with 375hp. Just very different than modern car power. Cheers

With 3.55 gears and a 27" tall tire. 255/60/15. 60 mph = 2900 rpm and 100 mph = 4500 tack is out 200 rpm i need to hang my timing light on there again and see which way its out i forget.

For me reducing the tire diameter helped smooth the take off with my 3.08 dif. gear. But that will not help you if you feel you are turning too many revs at speed.

I had my '71 LT-1 on the highway this past weekend (which i don't do too often) and was noticing the RPMs. I wish i read this thread first so i could have made specific note of it, but IIRC i was running about 3000 rpm driving between 60 and 70 mpm. The car has a 3.55 rear end so sounds about right.
