1972 Big Block Rescue

The hardest part is getting down onto the creeper without falling over...lol
He had it hanging up when I got there. It is only 3" thick on the wall so I even have room in my cramped garage.
OCB you need one.....
Very productive day. I did not want my front caster changing because of the 1/4" slots I made in my control arms. Now that I know the alignment works the way I want, I 'locked" in the caster setting on the rearward shifted stock a-arms by making some aluminum spacers. Saw something similar on some circle track stuff. Now the stud can't shift in the slot or move the 5 degree caster setting.
Here is the slot in my a-arm shaft. The slug fits pretty snug in there, and the nut will hold it in. The a-arm moved once 2 mm while I was measuring without these, and I did not know it until I went back in to measure for these. Who knows what would happen without them on some bumps.
Spent some time on the grinder. 0.5" aluminum rod. Now 10.8mm round then a 6.8mm flat. 20 mm deep. I made four of these.

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
From the steel flywheel to the new lightweight aluminum one.
He highly recommended getting it checked, because when the engine was balanced they drill the flywheel to do the balancing, so it is no longer a "standard" weight/balance.

Airborne to Montana right now.
18" blizzard coming in.
And my crazy son and his buddy are bicycling right into it !?!?!
Basically a Rescue Mission.
They will wake up in a tent tomorrow morning in the middle of nowhere at 20 degrees and at least 3 inches of snow.
I can only vaguely remember being that young and foolish!
Gonna play support truck for a few days!! Maybe they can finish their 4000 mile bike trip, or maybe not.
Missoula, MT here we come.
Load them up, if they let you, drive them south and release them back on their journey.
But only 3” of snow?
They can ride through that, right Dad!!!
It will add to the adventure.
You can follow along, take video, sit back and think crazy kids.
4 inches of snow and a 27 degree high was a little too cold for cycling. It was 75 degrees here only 2 days ago. So for some cold weather fun we 4wd as high as we could go up St Mary's Mtn, and when the trail got blocked we hiked most of the rest. The snow cleared just enough to give us gorgeous views. You could see 30 miles! They are stuck here for a couple days until the weather clears, so why not drive north almost to Canada and Glacier National Forest?? Tomorrow.
They are glad for the visitors, and we are all having a ball!
Tomorrow we'll have to dress warmer. It'll be Zero. And 81 when we get back to Philly WT?!?
And got to help my son.
Kudos to him, they biked thru 19 degrees, dressed up like skiers.
Corvette related:
We had some transmission gearing threads on here lately.
The transmission on this brand new big tired V6 Tacoma 4wd was a joke.
It would not hold 6th gear until 80+ mph, maybe, and even then it was only at 2000rpm. There just was not enough TQ for that airplane gearing. So 6th gear was virtually useless.
At 50-60-70 it kept trying to go 1300rpm in 5/6th gear but it could not hold a steady speed at that rpm, even on a flat road. It wound up down shifting / up shifting every 8 sec or so just to try to hold speed.
I thought the trans was gonna blow-up.
I finally just locked out 6th gear, kept it in 5th at 2000 @ 70, and it was much much better. 2300 @ 80. That made for a good cruise rpm. Even with the big load on the little engine.
When driving in 4wd, at 40-50, in the snow, I think I locked it into 3rd or 4th, as required, but as long as I kept it at 2000+rpm it was fine. Otherwise it went back to useless 1300 rpm again.
PITA
"Bring back the manuals!"
And kill the useless airplane gearing already!
So I have driven quite a few cars paying attention to this, and almost all are happy cruising at a minimum of 2000rpm. Only one was happy lower, like 1700.

Quick update: they went thru Lolo Pass Saturday, with 10 inches of fresh snow on the ground, but clear roads. 5500 ft. It's their last big mountain pass.
The skiers and the snowboarders were cheering them on!
They are bundled up like skiers.
Tent Camped even, in 15 degree weather.
3500 miles behind them, 700 left.
Astoria, Oregon by Nov 10!
Hells Canyon in 2 days.
The roads clear very quick in MT. The snow is so light & dry it is like dust. No luggage bags in this pic they are in my truck. But I think this is my new Christmas Card! Then they made a left and climbed those mountains in the background.
Did I mention we saw fresh tracks in the snow in Glacier? Snow Lynx I think. (They like rabbits) A little too small for a Mountain Lion, but too big for a Bobcat! Gulp. And a black bear felt like blocking the road while we were in the truck. I let him cross. It's wilderness baby. There was a story I heard while we were in Missoula, they had a Grizzly bear in town waiting at a bus stop a couple years ago.
