My latest one (basic basic basic but works properly with the MSD when my digital dialback one was all over the place) runs off batteries, only the sparkplug wire, actually nice not having to keep track of the other wires and their relationship with my headers....

I put the induction clamp around the number one wire when it was dead cold - then started it up... warmed up 10 minutes them set the timing, then waited an hour for it to cool down to get the induction clamp off... lol

If the engine is already hot, I sometimes put the clamp on close to the dist'r. It doesn't need to be at the spark plug, just pointed towards the spark plug.
