Depends on what is wrong with the tank. If you have areas with rust-thrus, the cheesy metal needs to be cut out and new piece brazed back on. If you just have a small crack or hole, patch it on the outside with JB Weld stick [putty] epoxy after cleaning/wire brushing the area to be sealed up. If a fitting is the problem, re-braze it or braze in a new fitting. Paint it satin black and put it back in the car.
If you're not too worried about originality you could mask off the ports are give it a good coat of bedliner. I've seen them seal industrial vac-tanks with it that take way more (less pressure (vacuum) than our tanks ever see, doesn't look all that out of place either.
POR15 and top-coat would work as well

I fixed my original tank that was split at the end of the indents and soldered the cracks with a butane torch but noticed when testing the tank it was flexing 1/2 inch in the centre so drilled a hole at front and back of tank ,tig welded a piece of 1/4 inch rod between the tank to stiffen up and it worked great ,no tank flex now .I don't want to do that job again as the tank will only go in one way and if repainted hard not to scratch ,I put the tank in a old pillow case then shimmied it in to place
