Default Catch-22

It's right here on the Corvette Forum!

If a party starts a thread wanting to know about 'XYZ', they are advised that there are approximately 27 threads on this topic, and that they should use the search function rather than to start a new thread.

If a party is industrious, and does, indeed, use the search function, which duly turns up an old thread on the topic, and then posts to the old thread, bringing it 'up to date' so to speak, the party is then chastised for resurrecting a zombie thread and told they should start a new one.

I made up water bottle holders for my Corvette using two bicycle water-bottle holders. Not elegant, but it does work.

DD,
I don't know why this happens. But it's a good way to turn off new members who come looking for help. We need to remember that there are new people joining CF every day and what seems old to some of us, is brand new to them. In my 20 years here, I never get tired of welcoming new members and answering the same questions for them.
After all, that's why we're all here, right?
Greg

IMHO nothing wrong with encouraging people to use the search function, see if the answer they seek is out there already. If a thread is found but doesn't quite answer all questions, I see nothing wrong with extending the thread with new questions. A possible compromise would be to start a new thread, provide a link to an old thread for reference>

I totally agree with you. I see many threads that were started 3, 4 or 5 years ago that take on a life of their own and just keep going. It's all still good usable info that should remain accessible to whoever might need it.

For me, Google seems to give more concise Corvette Forum information than the Forum search function. Doesn't eliminate the old thread situation however.

How about some pics of the water bottle holders?

Asking a member to start a new thread is not “chastising” or turning people off. If someone was actually chastised, I’d think they would know it.

There was a time when sanctions were actually given out for resurrecting threads with posts over 45 days old. That was considered to be counterproductive, but it resulted in moderators having to examine old threads on a case by case basis. Since Photobucket and Tinypic went to pay sites, many of the photos in old threads show up with blank placeholders or blurred out. This is the case in the thread you appear to be complaining about. It’s usually best to start new threads when the old one is 4 years old as in this case.

You might not be paying attention. If the old thread is closed not deleted (I always close then rather than delete them) they DO remain “accessible to whoever might need” them. They are searchable and readable. They are just not able to be added to.

This on the other hand, is spot on. Not all old threads are closed, as some are historical or particularly helpful in nature and not time sensitive. Some do not have a lot of interfered with photos mucking up the thread. In every case, a moderator has to make that call. And as suggested in this post, the best way to handle a new addition to a thread from years ago is to start a new thread, and if there’s valuable information in the old thread, add a link to it. Pretty simple.

As well, starting a new thread to complain about site moderation is not the way to handle that, either. Please review the following regarding complaints and suggestions.

Complaints, Suggestions & Questions

If you have suggestions for the improvement of the Forum, questions or criticism of the Forum or its moderation, you are welcome to PM or e-mail a moderator. Please do not use an open thread for such messages, however.

That would include, but is not limited to discussions about who has been banned and why.

The work on the Forum's volunteer moderators is difficult enough without having folks calling them out in open threads
