Default Unable to decipher this quadrajet carburetor code

This date code doesnt seem like a legit date code.

17054292
Edit ** 17054929

this should be a 1975-1979 carb as indicated by the 1705. But the 4 would say its a 1974? the 2 makes sense. But then the 9 doesnt make sense because ive only seen references up to 7.

it sits on a Chevy 350 L82 1974 manual. I’m pretty sure its not original but i cant make heads or tails of what it should be to verify if its a direct replacement for the 7044211 that should be there.

A 17054929 is a 1974 Service Replacement carb for a Chevy & GMC truck with a 350 or 400, as well as a service replacement carb for a 1974 350 & 400 Chevelle, El Camino, Nova, Corvette, and Camaro with either auto or manual transmission.

Thanks. i mistyped the number. Sorry about that.

why does it not follow any of the code deciphering tools i can find online? Is it because its a service carb. I assume it was made between 76 and 79 , correct? the “0468” indicates sometime in april 1978.

Actually, it follows all the "rules" for part numbering:
  • 170 prefix indicates it was built 1976 or later
  • 54 is an SR carb year code that covers its application for multiple years, including 1974. It was used for SR carbs from 1971 thru 1977.
  • 9XX was used to designate SR carbs, but there are SR carbs that do not have the "9XX" suffix (for example SR carbs built in the mid- and late- 60's). All "9XX" carbs that I am aware of are SR carbs, but not all SR carbs are "9XX" carbs.
  • 2 is Chevy application
  • 9 would normally designate manual trans, but the SR carbs, and other carbs, do not follow this rule. In this case, this is an SR carb for both manual and auto trans applications. There are many non-SR carbs that also do not follow the odd/even "rule" for transmission type.
My Q-Jet paper covers these "rules," and other nuances of the numbering "system." The only firm rule with regards to the Q-Jet numbering "rules" is that there are exceptions to every rule...
