I was going to say if it's not busted in the shift plate corners - it's not likely original. But maybe that's just mine
My 72 is a white-ish fiberglass color as well.

On my 73 console you can see where the foam padding was injected after the vinyl was attached to the fiberglass/plastic console. My doors cards, and hard top liners have the same type of product.

No it's not just yours, lol! Common problem I think. They sell a kit to repair those corners:

anything that's busted enough that a vendor creates a repair patch for you just know it was an issue
Mine has a pretty hard life over the years and the top ones were snapped off so I just epoxied some new aluminum pieces into the top corners, much like the kit except from the scrap bin, and drilled new holes to match the shifter-plate. 4 or 5 years and counting...

In the car, I look at the ridge that runs along the stitching on the edges. I've had a couple repos and the ridge is pretty flat compared to GM
