Default ‘73 Clock up for grabs

Hi all,

JohnRR put a clock for a 1973 up for grabs in the Pay it Forward thread before Christmas and I grabbed it to see if I could get it working again. I’m almost done with the clean-up on it and I am happy to report that it works like a champ! It would be great for someone restoring a ‘73 who needs a functioning original clock. This would be great for someone doing an NCRS restoration.

The face has some paint deterioration between the 2 and 3 o’clock position that I’m not going to mess with. The reason being, I want the eventual owner to be able to do the restoration of the face to their satisfaction. I’m not sure I can match the black paint on the clock face and being a perfectionist, I don’t want to disappoint.

That said, I’m not going to put it back together until someone claims it and here’s why: If you need a functioning clock for your ‘73 and yours has a good face, send it to me. I’ll swap the faces out and send you the functional clock and repair the one you send me and maybe we can continue the giving!

Also, I’ve found that I really enjoy getting these old clocks working again. A few years ago the in thing was switching to the quarts clock. Recently there seems to be a trend towards reconditioning the original mechanical clock. If you have a clock that isn’t working and you want to try to get it working again, I’d be happy to give it a shot. Honestly, the hardest part of the process is removing the clock from the instrument cluster, but if you don’t want to mess with it, I’d be happy to give it a shot.

From the forum, I know there are plenty of folks restoring their interior and while you have it out, you might as well get that old clock working again! I’ll do it for the cost of shipping, so if you’re interested, shoot me a PM and I’ll see what I can do. No guarantees, but I’m two for two (a ‘77 and a ‘73) and would be happy to give your clock a shot!

I’m offering this as a small gesture to the forum that has given so much to me. I don’t want to leave anyone out, so I’m not going to drop names, but I’ve gotten so much here that I would be remiss if I didn’t do something to give back!

Out of curiosity what is the main issue that kills the clocks? Does the lubricant turn hard and stop the mechanism moving? I'd like to get mine working.

I'll be pulling my clock out this week....and it doesn't work. If you're willing to take a look at it, that would be awesome!

Let me know.

not turns hard so much, but dust and dirt stick to it, and after all these years they dont want to move.

The two that I’ve done have just been dirty. A little electric contact cleaner that is plastic friendly and some light machine oil and they spring right back to life.

Gregg, PM sent.
