What's the VIN does it match the build date with the trim tag?

My 73 is original white with Saddle deluxe leather interior.
The original owner dyed it all black in the 90's and you can not tell today that it was ever anything but black.

Looks like someone installed a trim tag from a '68, 972 Polar White with 436 Tobacco Leather.
Yours should be 972 Classic White with 404 Black Leather.

Trim tag can only be from a '68 car. The exterior and interior codes were both available in ONLY 1968. Whether the trim tag got replaced on that car....or whether the birdcage from a 1968 car was used to create that '72 car, I don't have a clue. From your photo, the trim tag does not appear to have been removed....but it's a photo on a computer screen.?

Thanks for the incite so far. I will have more information soon. I'll post the vin after I research it a bit more, I do know a bit about 68's having owned and restored one back in 77-79 at this point nothing indicates this car was anything but a 72.

Well, there is no doubt the car has been repainted. They painted right over the door jamb switch.
Get a powerful flashlight and look at the bulkhead above the differential under the car. There is always overspray from the original paint color there as the bodies were painted before they were placed on the chassis. Anyone careless enough to paint over a door switch will not have removed paint from this area during a color switch. You can also check under the carpet.

Whatever you find, "it is what it is". Understanding where it came from is merely interesting history...which could be of use to you as you work on it. Your project looks challenging but very "doable". Enjoy the refurb trip!!

If the VIN is not between 510310-512661 for a January build in 1972 then the trim tag does not go with this Corvette.

Engine build date
T= Tonawanda
03= March
16= 16th day
CSS= 454 270HP air injection reactor Smog pump Automatic Trans
VIN 16980= H March VIN production 515020 to 517613 for the month
So not its original trim tag. But the engine pad stamps looks very correct and W on the VIN indicates big block.
