Default Rear Window

I have a 74 Widebody and the builder put a 1980 rear window in but it does not tilt up.. Has anyone done the same? Reason is I want to have it tinted and so far tinter types say they cant do it. My idea is to remvoe the window, have it tinted are refit. But so much extra work than a straight tint.

Tinting that back window I can agree can be difficult for a tint guy to do but I'm sure that if you search, you will eventually find someone to do it. Removing the glass would not be a consideration if it were my car, and a little extreme. I woul though and have you considered putting a rear louver on the rear glass? That would serve the same purpose of the tint and look cool at the same time. The one made by Cragar is the one to buy and they do come up for sale here from time to time. Just my .02.
BTW love the look of your car. The louvered tails and fender vents are cool,

Had not considered the louvers! I will see about a virtual to decide if it works with the styling. This car was styled by a couple of Detroit Historical people and I want to keep their vision.

thank you for the compliment on the details. I can claim only that I own it, not responsible for the creation but it will be preserved. Entire car except interior has less than 100 miles on it. Garaged for 42 yrs

Here are a couple of pictures of 2 different styles of louvers commonly available that work with the 78-82 rear window. Personally, I think the Crager style on the black car would be better suited to your car. I wonder if someone could custom make a set that kept all of the lines flowing horizontally rather than transitioning on the curve from horizontal to vertical.

Really appreciate your images and fast help. This takes the guesswork out. The mods you spoke of are interesting too.
In visioning the louvers and the taillights I believe it makes it too busy viewing from the rear angles. I will pursue the tint road.

Also, instead of removing and refitting rear window to tint it, I would suggest removing the seats to allow space to work. Even just removing the passenger side to be able to drive to a shop would make a world of difference

I have to check with more tinters. When I tell them it is an 81 window that doesn’t tilt up they don’t understand. When I show up and they see it does not tilt up they tell me “ it doesn’t tilt”🥴. Like it is a surprise to me. 🤔

Also, I seem to remember reading about a tinted plexiglass insert that went inside of the rear window that may have been available for the 78-82 rear window. I think it was called a Gila sunshade. The only issue that I can think of is that it would provide reflections when viewed from outside that would take away from the clean appearance of your car.

Here is a picture of a black Vette with a tinted rear window. In my opinion, even though the tint is extra work, it is the best looking option.

That black car has tint film. Not removable (easily), but if done correctly still easy to see out
