The square footage you will depends on just how much of the surface you want to cover, I would say 20-30 square feet minimum just for the floor but if you do the doors, etc. your needs will go up, I would personally start with 40 square feet. The main reason I'm replying to your thread, is because I've been removing the black sprayed on sound deadener/under coating recently....you can try, scrapers, razor blade, razor blade on a screwdriver handle tool, chemicals (I wouldn't dare) but what works very effectively even though it's small is an X-acto style knife with this style blade. You'll find the under coating will be very dried out and these blades are stiff enough and small enough that you can really "lean" on it and plow right through it. It's a bit tedious, but will get you right down to the metal quickly and it works on fiberglass sections without harming those with the right technique! You can find these at most home improvement stores. Hope this helps. Just remembered your car probably doesn't have metal floors, but this is still the way to go.

Blade is 1/2" wide and 1"long

I'm not sure what the black tar stuff is, there was a sound /heat deadening backing on the carpet, sort of felt with a tar-paper layer. If it's that then it goes with the carpet.
Anyway, hushmat should be stuck right to the floor itself. clean, dry, etc.
As for how much you need.... a bunch...
It depends on how far you are going to go. How far up the firewall, trans tunnel, rear wall behind the seats etc etc etc
There's a bunch of threads on how much and where to use so maybe look around and then use your best guess to decide
