Default NCRS ? Survivor

Just picked up a1971C3 coupe. Steel cities gray appears to be extremely original including all of the paint. Not a high horsepower car but loaded with options in very good condition. It seems like the car has all original components except for tires and battery. Wondering if this car is a candidate for NCRS survivor category? Would like to take it to be judged if it’s even a possibility.

The NCRS term is Bowtie. Survivor is used by Bloomington Gold. You must be a member of the NCRS to have it judged plus a Bowtie can only be obtained at their National event. Plus it has to be per-judged at a Regional judging event to be accepted at the National. Bloomington Gold is a once a year and there is no membership needed. To do ether is a expensive to do the NCRS process expect to spend $3000 to $4500 or more. That is cost of judging, transportation, hotels, meals etc. Bloomington would be slightly lower but it depends if you chose to have more judging done Gold, Survivor and Benchmark done it will go up very fast.

NCRS STAR AND NCRS CHEVROLET BOWTIE Award NCRS Star and Bowtie Awards are earned only at National Conventions by unrestored cars successfully judged and voted to be historically and educationally significant in any one or more of four areas (Interior, Exterior, Mechanical, and Chassis). The award is intended to recognize the car and encourage the owner to retain and display the car in its present condition for the enjoyment and continuing educational benefit of our membership. NCRS One-, Two- or Three-Star Awards are achieved by a successful judging and voting in any one, two or three of the four listed areas. The NCRS Chevrolet Bowtie Award is achieved by a successful judging and voting in all four areas. Subsequent to this judging, the NCRS Chevrolet 5-Star Bowtie Award may be achieved as described in Section 6, Item #12 of the NCRS Judging Reference Manual. Only 340 Corvettes have received this prestigious award.

I had my 68 427/400 coupe at Bloomington for SURVIVOR judging and had it certified as a SURVIVOR. It was a great experience. The Same 68 was NCRS Top Flight'ed twice at a Chapter and then a Regional event. The NCRS Bowtie certification is a much more stringent process to achieve. My 68 did not receive the Bowtie Award. Let me know if you would like a few pointers.

Gentlemen thank you for clarifying this.No doubt a lot of work. I may attend a couple of these events to get the feel for it and then decide where to go from there. Thanks again

Please resist changing things out and making improvements until you decide what to do. Well intended cleaning and fixes or replacements maybe regretted later if you decide to go the unrestored route.

Hey Charlie,

I am heading down the same path in terms of wanting to get a car judged once I am done with my current restoration work. Appreciate the post and the responses that you got. Learning lesson for me too. PJO and Easy Mike have helped me out numerous times, smart dudes for sure!

1. I've got the NCRS Membership, I've got the 5th Edition NCRS Judging book and the AIM manual for '69, currently documenting and photographing as I go
2. Guess my next step is finding a Regional NCRS Judging event once I'm done with my current restoration work. Then, perhaps on to a National Event depending on how the Regional event goes and how long the list of things to correct is.
3. There is a Bloomington Gold judging event at the Hendrick Motorsport Complex in October here in Concord, NC that I have my eye on and am hoping to attend with my '69. Saw a couple of 1969 Black / Black cars at this event last year but no Black / Red 1969's so I am hopeful at least at this point.

The easiest and quickest thing to do and, especially the NCRS route, is get in touch with local NCRS members who are familiar with your year Corvette and just have them look at it. The judges are essentially the same for both organizations and especially for C3 years so knowledgeable individuals can do a walk around and provide some immediate guidance. If you in the Charlotte area, there are quite a few knowledgeable individuals as well as the BG Charlotte event.

As for Kevin, remember your car would not be judged as either survivor or Bowtie but either Flight or Certification. In fact there is a chapter event in Wake Forest weekend of March 5th-6th but that may be too soon for you.
