I’ve heard people say that a 90’s something model Chevy truck has a small hi torque starter. Can anyone shed some light on this. I have a PM high torque now and it is suspect to a intermittent problem I’m having.
I referenced a 98 Chevy Silverado and got the correct GM mini starter for my Big Block. Will work for a SB as well. Make sure you get the correct GM starter Bolts. They are available at any GM parts house for about 10 bucks. Dont skip the new bolts or the starter nose may crack.

In the 90's everything went on a diet. The early starters used essentially electromagnetes. The later models use permanent magnets. It allows for lighter and higher torque starter.
Sometimes won’t start Looks to be getting power just kinda locks. Pull the wires off reattach it starts. I’ve cleaned all connections and dielectric greased. Also cleaned up main ground for battery.
OP
Perhaps you take starter to a local, reputable, experience auto electric shop which rebuilds starters & alternators. A good shop can test bench test it and quickly diagnose problem. May be as simple as a bad connection inside solenoid to a lug?
Good likelihood they can fix it for small money. If so, you can run it or keep it as a spare. Either way, a starter like I recommend above should do you proud.
FWIW, perhaps your Powermaster 9500 is based on a Denso brand ? If so, you might mention that if you call around different shops.
I called and he said he wasn’t familiar with that brand but he would look at it. For 50 bucks I’ll probably buy and then see about having it checked. Powermaster offers a rebuild service but I don’t want the car down for that long right now.

Can't understand ... do you mean SDR0031L ??? as in Zero Three One L ... if Yes ... note the two are identical EXCEPT 31L has an "R" terminal and 19L has No "R" terminal. The "R" terminal is required for points distributor But is Not needed or used with an HEI dist. Either will work for you but you will not be using or need an "R" post w/ HEI. Again, my understanding has been and is that you have 168T flywheel and have HEI distributor.
