There are legal ways to transfer the VIN from one vehicle to another. You just have to file the correct paperwork though your DMV.
It is only illegal to do so, with the intent to commit theft or fraud.
You can't even remove your vin tag, repair the rust and reattach the tag to the same spot. Putting vin from 1 car on another is never acceptable or legal.
How did we get talking about VIN tags? My point was that if the body is salvageable, or even just the birdcage, that IS the car, and GM isn't making any more.
If the body spends it's time as a beach buggy, or lawn ornament, or as a bare birdcage stashed away in a barn, it can still be rebuilt someday, even if it doesn't make economic sense today. Once it's crushed, it's gone forever.

California must be different than your state, because you can remove, replace and re VIN any vehicle of vessel as long as you do it in a lawful manner.
It's not just a singed body. He says see pictures for damage. But he shows no pictures of the actual roof panel. But the heat damage on the top of the fenders and the top of the doors tells you what you're gonna see if you look at the roof. This body is not salvageable. And taking the Vin number off is not legal. It's a parts car. Tell him you'll take it out of his yard for free and you're still paying a little too much. He got it for free figuring he was going to flip it and make money on it.
Agreed, and there arent even many parts worth pulling. The A arms, the rear end, maybe the trailing arms....
I dont know how heat damages fiberglass, but if that fire was bad enough to totally consume everything in the cabin, then Id consider much of the outer body compromised as well. Donate it to a local high school and let them explore ways to take it apart. Then again theres probably some cancer risk associated with all that burned plastic....
Theres a saying that comes to mind here......'you cant save em all'......
