I was able to unscrew the ball on the shifter to the top by the button. It would not unscrew complete and became tight. I didn’t want to force it so I tried to put it in neutral and also pressing the button in while unscrewing. Does anyone know what I’m doing incorrectly?

The leather boot takes some patience to install and stay firmly in the frame. There's some kind of plastic around one side of the metal band that retains the boot--I'm sure it's there to cover the sharp edges and prevent damaging the leather. Mine was in poor shape so I used two or three layers of black electrical tape.
