Default 1981 C3 automatic leather shift boot replacement

Hello,

I was able to unscrew the ball on the shifter to the top by the button. It would not unscrew complete and became tight. I didn’t want to force it so I tried to put it in neutral and also pressing the button in while unscrewing. Does anyone know what I’m doing incorrectly?

The button unscrews first (completely)......then the ball.

The leather boot takes some patience to install and stay firmly in the frame. There's some kind of plastic around one side of the metal band that retains the boot--I'm sure it's there to cover the sharp edges and prevent damaging the leather. Mine was in poor shape so I used two or three layers of black electrical tape.

Thanks. I didn’t think to unscrew the button. I got it installed and I’m on to the next repair.
