Default C3 4-Speed Shifter Removal

I am in the process of removing the engine and transmission from my 1973 Stingray I am restoring.

I have searched the forum several times about this subject and most of the threads replying to it are old and the pictures no longer up. Some information was conflicting.

But from what I read I have got the following:

1. Remove bolts for the three shift levers under the car.
2. Remove Theo bolts from the shifter. I only see one up top as shown in the attached picture. Where is the other one?

Once this is done do the shifter and levers drop out of the bottom? Does the shift **** and reverse lockout have to come off before it drops down out of the bottom of the car? How do you take those off?

Thanks in advance for your help everyone.

Unscrew the shift **** by turning ccw, pull out reverse lockout.
The second bolt maybe hidden by the shift levers, move them and you should see it from under the car.

Wow! That shifter **** and reverse lockout came off easier than I thought. I’ll do the shift levers next weekend and pull out the assembly.

Sorry for the rookie question. I’ve pulled several manual transmissions from new cars (T45, T56) and the shifter came out of the top. Thanks again sir!

Look at this thread... lotsa good pictures and note that the shifter assembly is bolted on the frame and not to the tranny.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...cket-help.html

Below is an image from a 68 AIM....Disconnect the rods from the tranny and the shifter and set them out of the way. Remove the bracket that holds the shifter. You can then work on removing the shifter and the tranny...(from below).

Thanks for the picture! That makes things even easier.

Will the shifter assembly come out without having to remove the transmission?

The stock shifter isnt mounted to the transmission at all. you cam pull the transmission with the shifter in the car still, just remove the linkages from the tranny. If want to pull the shifter you'll have to support the transmission and take out the transmission mount. The shifter is mounted to its own mount but that mount is mounted to the crossmember and theres not much room to manuever under there. Just use a floor jack and unbolt it and jack it up slightly as you try to twist it out. Its oable you just need to be under the car alot

That may complicate things a bit.

My plan was to pull the motor and tranny out as one unit. If the shifter is still attached that seems like it it will hit the transmission tunnel preventing me from pulling out the engine and transmission

Still doable I’ll give it a go this weekend. I’ll keep everyone posted

you can pull the tranny and engine as one leaving the stock shifter in place, just remove the 3 linkages and speddo cable. The stock shifter is monted to the crossmemeber. If its a Hurst it will be mounted to the tranny in 2 places. I'll look fo r a pic for you. Alot of people dont like the stock shifter because its separate from the tranny, they believe it can bind under heavy load and speed shifting since it doesnt move with the engine and tranny.

heres a pic of the shifter and mount

You can see its stamped steel and the tranny just sits next to it, but in your picture it looks like they used aluminum stock to mount yours, you may be looking at something different than stock mounting. You may want to verify whats under there. If its been modded theres a second bolt in front of and below the one your pointing at. If you pull that one it should flop around so you can see the other. Be aware that when you pull that one your shifter will seperate and your shims will falll out possibly, but it looks like it needs a rebuild anyway

IF they modded t to be like a Hurst shifter it may look like this. If thats the case and you can get under it it just will need to unbolt from the tail housing

You can see the Hurst shifter plate that mounts to the tail section there. If You have to, pull the bolt your touching, and swivel the shifter and look for a second bolt to get teh shift lever out. Then jack the tranny up and take out the rubber tranny mount and lower it. It may give you enough room to slide out under the floor with the plate still attached .
