I was on bring a trailer today looking at a 1979 Corvette. in the comment section the so called experts are saying the trim tags after 1976 from St Louis built cars are painted the colour of the car. I don't believe this. All the tags I've ever seen are bare metal unless the car has been repainted. Can anyone confirm this?
This is the Trim Tag on my Silver 1979 Corvette. It's an original 17,000-mile car that I bought new almost 41 years ago. The car has never been repainted. The tag, which is attached in the driver's side door jamb, is painted the same color as the car.
weird mine one owner previous 28k miles.. i know what areas repainted..and this wasnt one of them.. and it looked like yours with less paint..and cracked like that.. my fingernail popped it all off.. strange.. i wonder when plate put on..it was not overspray

I saw that one on BAT, didn't reach reserve. The yellow over oyster white is a little too pale looking...black interior would sure look better.
From 74 or 75, through the end of production at St. Louis in July 1981, the trim tags were painted. The tag was installed between the second and third coat of paint, so they weren't primered and only had a thin, single coat of paint applied. Because the tag is stainless, and it only received a single coat of paint, the paint easily pealed off, and was often removed by owners too.
When production began at Bowling Green in June 81, trim tags were no longer installed during the painting process. Instead, the trim tags were installed after the body left the paint area, so Bowling Green trim tags were not painted.

that describes mine perfectly..very thin layer not overspray...gee maybe I shouldn’t have picked the rest off? It does not stick well
To confirm what others have reported, a study team has formed to update the 75-77 NCRS technical manual and this topic is one we are attempting to track down when in 75, tags were painted. I suspect the change occurred during model year changes and thus all 75 tags were painted. To illustrate, below is VIN 31914 with a build date of June. You'll see paint flakes on the tag surrounded by Bright Blue paint.
