Very new to working on cars and found something i can't figure out.
This junk was found in my carb. I ordered a new gas tank and filter, but does anyone have any idea what it could be?
Is modern gas eating at something that I should be aware of?
p.s. love this forum! It is like the worlds best encyclopedia for a young guy like me!
None of my friends are into classic cars, so this is the only community I have found! Hopefully I can help keep the classic car tradition around!

I am not at my shop right now, but if I were I would send you a photo of a residue that is exactly like that from the bottom of a swamp cooler.
the left over water in the cooler basin had all but completely evaporated and left that kind of product.
AFA the water is concerned I believe the residue is solidified minerals that are common in AZ well water.
so, I wonder if your residue is simply the same thing left from water that was in your gas tank?
Maybe——maybe not?
Thanks for the reply! I usually drive in on the weekends, but my job took me away for a couple of months. I guess that could be long enough for the gas to go bad! Do you think getting the new tank was overkill?
bad gas ,, you right on the money ...drain your gas tank out or get seafoam ,, its breaks down that mess ,, replace your fuel filter ,, and clean the carb ,, this is very common for a car that sat ,, **** fuel
Could be collected crud from years of putting gas stabilizer in it when stored each winter. I've found that stuff in several carbs and the red color gives it away. It is nasty to clean out.

I suppose it is bad gas .......but here is that photo of that dried water mineral from a swamp cooler I mentioned in the thread above.

The stuff in the background is just leaves from somewhere else

Up here in Canada we see that quite often. Long winters. It's bad gas and starts with a kind of rusty looking spongy sludge that gets harder with age and breaks down into pieces like in your pic. What you want to worry about is not just cleaning out the carb but what's in, and on the other side of the fuel filter...
