Default Seat Question

Weird question I know you will have the answer to! On my 79 L82 4 speed are the drivers seat and passengers seat interchangeable? The reasoning is I plan on doing the seats over eventually but the passengers seat, frame, and shell is in better condition than the drivers. I was hoping to unbolt the passengers and the drivers and swap. Put the drivers seat and rails in the passenger area and the passengers seat and rails in the drivers until I get them fixed/reupholstered. Thank you!

Yep, you got all the right answers. FYI.....the drivers side is fastened with 1/2 inch nuts on the underside of the floor pan. Easily assessable without a lift. The passenger side have the same 1/2 inch bolt heads, but they are bolts that screw through the floor pan to nuts fastened to the underside of the floorpan, easily assessable from the topside. Why the difference from side to side? My guess is the catalytic converter would be in the way for nuts on the passenger.side floorpan.

On my '79 all of the seat bolts are on the cabin side. Note that they are NOT the bolts you see if you remove the bottom cushion! The seats are light and easy to remove but you do need a lot of extension to access the rear ones. Do NOT install the seat on the driver side with the seatback fully folded down as it won't clear the steering wheel and you'll be removing the seat again

When redoing my seats the driver outboard cushion had some minor splits. I have rare green cloth seats so they're not available to buy. Anyhow if you save similar problems the basic Permatex vinyl/leather repair kits work amazingly well provided you carefully follow the instructions. The most important part is getting to the backside to cement on a heavy backing fabric. It's not difficult to remove the seat covers from the foam as everything is held on with hog rings. They're called "hog rings" because larger versions are put in the nose of hogs (between the nostrils) to keep them from rooting. Just open them up with TWO pairs of pliers. Hog ring pliers (for installation) are cheap and readily available at farm and upholstery supply stores. You'll have to get the rings themselves from a place that deals in upholstery. Ordinary clothes hanger wire is just right to replace any of the wires around the perimeter and in the pleats.

Awesome! That's my weekend plan. Going to take off the drivers attached to the frame/rails and unbolt it from the floor and switch with the passengers. Thank you all for your great responses!

I don’t believe that you also have a 79L 82 for speed without pictures.
I accidentally mixed up my seats when I took them out and was all concerned about putting them back correctly, i figured out which one went where and I had them backwards and left it. Its amazing how different after sitting there for 40 years of somebody else sitting in drivers seat in the same position, feels like new swapped..

maybe we should swap them every year or so for even wear.

Just leave it that way and let the spousal unit suffer.
