Default C3 Firewall Electrical Connector

Hey all,

Was yellow-lining the electrical system of my '81 C3, and when I pulled the firewall connector apart and looked inside, I saw this:

Any thoughts on best way to "de-gunk"? I've heard brake cleaner, Dremel tool - anybody had any luck with anything that looked similar.

Any responses sincerely appreciated!

That 'goo' keeps the connectors- connecting. Its a coating that keeps the metal from oxidizing - "anti-oxidant"

You can clean it up- but you'll need to coat it with anti-oxidant so it doesn't corrode/oxidize in the future.

If you do clean- you'll wanna make SURE it's good and dry before you put it back together-

Richard454,

Thank you so much for the prompt reply.

Ah, yes, anti-oxidant, didn't think of that, but of course it makes sense. It seems particularly dirty, even with the anti-oxidant, but maybe it's okay to just put it back together.

Thanks again Richard454,

Robert

I think I would clean it up as best as possible with contact cleaner and a toothbrush, then apply new dielectric grease.

Contact Cleaner Contact Cleaner

Dielectric Grease Dielectric Grease

Note: The links I inserted were for products on Amazon, but somehow they became links to the same products on eBay. I don't know how that happened, but you can find the same products on Amazon, and I believe they are less cost on Amazon too.

The dirt and grime needs "to go"! Mine was worse. Is it just me or is there no weatherstrip to keep the grime out of the box?

Thanks for the replies as well ClothSeats and doorgunner!

I was leaning towards cleaning this up a bit before putting it back together and will do just that.

WD-40 Contact Cleaner, with a toothbrush, make sure it is completely dry, apply antioxidant paste, put it back together.

It does seem like there should be some type of gasket, but I haven't looked closely enough, but will. There is quite a bit of "road debris" on the outside of this connector as it is largely right behind the left front wheel and up a bit, as I'm sure you all know. If there isn't a gasket, there probably should be one. If there is one, it will get replaced.

Thanks again ALL!

Vacuum it out; spray with electrical contact cleaner; scrub around with toothbrush or other small/stiff brush; spray with contact cleaner again; and blow out with compressed air. That should do it.
Be careful if you use a solvent like lacquer thinner. It could attack the plastic housing.or weaken it.
