Default Temperature sensor

Hi Guys, I just put in a new engine harness in my 74 Corvette, but now the temperature sensor isn't working, I replaced it with a 1 lead and still I got a funky reading.
When the engine starts it works for a while and goes up to 110-120 after that it jumps around a bit but then goes back to 100 and stays there.
Has anyone ever seen this before ?

Ron.

What happens if you remove the lead and ground it, does it go to max?

Hi, I remove the wire and ground it but nothing happens. Is this normal since I believe the other side of the gauge is already grounded.

the temperature sensor varies in resistance as the temperature changes. If the wire connected to it is grounded the gauge should go to maximum.
Check for a broken connection at the connector.

You stated that you "replaced it with a 1 lead". If you mean that you replaced the sensor having 2 contacts, then you replaced the wrong sensor. The regular 'gauge' sensor is on the left cylinder bank. The sensor on the right bank is the TCS temp sensor (2 contacts at 90 degrees from each other) and it does not connect with the temp gauge in the dash bezel.

If this is the case, re-install the TCS sensor in the right cylinder bank with its wiring, and put the 'replacement' sensor in the left cylinder bank. If the gauge then reads incorrectly, go to the Willcox.com site and use their trouble-shooting guide to determine the wiring fault.

Thanks 7T1vette, I spliced the wire a little further down and it's working like new.
I stuck my Powerprobe into the connector and didn't get a reading, but a little further down I got 12v :-)
Thanks for you help.
