I hope someone can help me in this. Took drive shaft off years ago to start restoration. Didn't mark anything and shaft got a light coat of aluminum paint. Have new universal joints for front and rear. Motor and transmission were out as was rear end. Are there any alignment points I need to make before installing? Do the transmission and rear end need to be set or positioned in a specific manner?
It is an automatic of that matters.
Reinstall it, if you have a vibration issue you can always rotate it 180 at the differential. You have no other choice since you have no way of knowing how it was originally oriented.
To install: Place transmission in Neutral range; raise driveshaft (d/s) and slide rear joint above and to one side of the rear gear housing; slide the splined shaft at the front onto the trans output shaft part-way(lube output seal first to prevent seal damage); supporting the rear of d/s, slide shaft forward until the rear U-joint clears rear gear yoke; align rear joint with rear gear yoke and put it into proper placement; install retaining bolts/retainers. You may need a ratchet wrench with 1 or 2 long extensions and the proper sized socket to gain access and tighten those rear yoke bolts.
