Default Frame VIN

So after blasting my '71 frame, I was able to better see the two VINs stamped into the frame rails:


Here's the one between the #2 & #3 body mounts...



...and the one on the rear side rail

My question: Is it "normal" for the first digit to be upside down? Technique or just a die digit mistakenly placed incorrectly? Not that I can do anything about it, just curious...

Digit was likely inserted by operator on Friday afternoon, after his 'liquid' lunch.... He couldn't focus well enough to see the number was inverted.

"1"s being upside down, O's being used for "0"s, and other such "substitutions" were often made on the assembly line. They would make do with whatever was available to get the job done.
