Wondering what it might possibly cost to re paint from red color to black paint. No body work needed at all. Thanks for any information.
Well with the information given I would say between $20 and $20,000.
What quality are you looking for? Are you going to prep it and pull the interior out or do you want them to do it?
You will seriously get responses ranging from "I had a top end shop paint mine flawlessly for $20K" to "I painted mine in my grammas basement for $20 of materials and a case of beer".
My vote would be for a nice paint job with them doing the prep and absolutely no body work, around $15K.
$10k was the price I was quoted to color change my '73. No evident body work needed, but as soon as they start sanding, they'll uncover stuff that needs to be fixed right.
Id say 8-10 for a nice job..they are going to have to take the bumpers, trim off, it can add up on labor hours.
They are all gonna say "look I found this need more"...get all changes in writing every time period!
Its worth it if you like the car. Getting a late model truck done (ins job) will still run me 3k by the time its done...cant do new paint 20 yr old trim emblems etc....sure they found some bondo they billed me for to...its bs but it will be perfect.
Get it done right it will look great for 15-20 yrs if you store it right. Love me some nice paint, who cares if you get a rock chip its just a car.
If I can get a super nice black paint job with the whole truck stripped, bed some glass removed, new trim, rubbed out and reassembled I dont see why a vette ought to be more its a lot less real estate. (Hopefully I see it in a few weeks!)
It will depend on the body shops desire to finish your car. If its a typical body shop collision work pays the bills. Most shops are at least $75 and many are at over $100. As you narrow down your body shop choices go into the shops work area and see if there are any dust covered cars that looks like they have been there forever. Run don't walk away from those shops.
If you aren't doing any of the work I think $12,000 is light. Quality materials will be at least $3000. If you want to look really nice doors and hood pulled off and prepped separately. Little things like door strikers and locks removed. All trim removed. Weather strips removed.
Unless your car is original paint most body shops won't do body work or paint over someone else's paint work. And yes again if you want your car to be "straight" It's going take at least a skim coat of filler. Then a couple of rounds of sanding primer. Then add the color sanding and buffing.
I take it back. I think $15,000 at least and maybe closer to $20,000.
One tip if the shop is taking your car apart make sure they bag and label every part down to the last screw. You supply the plastic bags and marker if needed. Then as the parts are removed you go and pick up the parts removed and store them at your house. The reason to say this is if the project goes sideways you have the parts not the body shop.
If you are paying full body shop rates I would expect a weekly update on progress. No different than a collision repair.
Just my long .02.

I agree…. To get a very good job done everything above is correct.... Mine was in the shop for paint last year and it looked like they took my car apart and put it on a clothes hanger.. doors, deck lid, lights, and much more... painted by the piece... If it came off, they had it off! Cost was well north of the dollars listed above.... Could not be happier with the results !
a properly done color change will almost double your cost.
Done right, virtually every single part has to be removed prepped and painted.
thats about 24 individual parts on a C3.

Thank you for this post. This illustrates how a correct body color change should take place. OK, maybe this is more complete than some would want. However, there should be a special place in hell for body shops and owners that conspire to damage Corvettes with color repainting. Damn. My 1970 Corvette, originally Malibu Grey, was firehosed with a goopy thick red enamel of some sort. Getting rid of this stuff is a PITA. Goopy red overspray everywhere.
