Not sure how you could get the spray where it needs to go from the front face of the gauge bezel. You can remove the clock set ****; but the spray also has to pass the clock dial face and two or three layers of gears. And getting lube in the RIGHT places is a good idea; getting it into the gear sets is not.
If the clock is non-functional and you intend to remove and replace it if you can't get it operating, you have lost nothing in trying your spray lube method. The worst case it that you may have to clean up any mess after you open the bezel up. Personally, it would be better to open up the bezel and lube it properly to see if it can be made to function. Then, if not, replace it.
