My problem is that the gear shift shaft is coming too close (touching) the console when in reverse. This destroys the rubber shifter boot. I am reluctant to replace the boot because this will be a recurring issue. Has anyone else had this problem? What is the solution?

Reason: mistake
Have you looked under the car where the shifter attaches to the bracket?
Is the bracket bent or not tight to the frame?
Is the shifter not tight to the bracket?
If nothing found can a shim/washer between the shifter and bracket on the lower bolt shift the handle enough to prevent interference?
My late 69 has an inner rubber boot and an outer leather boot, did yours never have the leather boot?

the font of the bracket can be shimmed to keep the shifter from traveling that far. You should have 2 sets of holes on the shift arms on the transmission. Use the lower hole closest to the pivot and you will shorten the shift travel for 1-4 gears. Reverse is already very short so tilting the bracket towards the rear will move that away from the trim plate.
