The chrome receivers behind the headrests were used for both hard and soft tops. The factory only drilled a center hole and put a stainless bezel around it when the car was ordered with a hardtop.

I'm pretty sure my May, 68 was ordered with a hardtop. It doesn't have the third center hole.
The Convertibles with the hardtop and soft top and the Coupes with the T tops, have pins that fit into the chrome plated mouldings at the extreme left and right ends of the windshield frame. My hardtop beat the **** out of these mouldings. To replace them, I had to remove (destroy) the windshield. The hardtop weatherstriping screw heads also chipped the drivers and passengers window glass. After these repairs I never used the hardtop again.
The 68s didnt have the hole for the center bolt, that was a 69 model change, The hardtop itself didnt have the bracket for the center bolt
Makes sense... I recently bought a hardtop for my '70 and it does not have the center bolt.... If it did I would not have purchased it as I dont want the hole back there... Going on next week..
2020 Corvette of the Year Finalist (performance mods)

2016 C3 of Year Finalist
FYI 2 things
Without the center bolt you may have a gap back there but the rain wont come it...really no big deal
The weight of the top will scratch your paint so you want ot get the per cut vinyl that fits under it or have a clear piece of wrap material cut at a sign shop and have it installed
