Can anyone tell me what this is and if it is an amplifier was it standard on my 76 or an add on? How was this hooked up to the radio, it was not hooked up when I replaced my dash and speakers. would be nice to use. Thanks.
That's the factory power transistor heat sink. One transistor mono, two transistors for stereo. Your wires look cut, it had a connector at the end of the harness that plugged into the radio.
Yes, it's original but it's not truly an amplifier. It's what they called a "convector". It's a big heat sink with the power transistor(s) which are just a component of a power amplifier attached. It cannot be used with modern stereo systems. It may though prove to be a good mounting place for a true power amplifier. If you don't use it for that purpose I would leave it there as someone someday may want to rebuild the original radio system.
