Curious if anyone has dealt with this. I’ve noticed my A/C Compressor on my 79 is making an awful noise even without the A/C being on. Any ideas as to why?
My clutch failed last year. Made a terrible noise when it was not engaged, Noise went away when the clutch engaged. Don't know if that's your problem, but just in case, I'll share the rest of the story. I didn't want to open the system because it was recently charged, and we can't get R-12 in Canada any more. So, my plan was to replace the clutch. Got the appropriate puller and ordered a clutch. Turns out not all Delco radial compressors are created equal. The newer clutches don't fit the older compressors. Found a used compressor at the local wrecking yard. Bearings were bad so I got the entire assembly for $20. Disassembled the clutch from that one along with mine. Reassembled the clutch using the best parts from both units to make one good one. It worked, but I suspect the next time I have problems, I'm going to be looking at a complete R-134 conversion with a Sanden compressor.
