Default Interior door panels

Has anyone here recovered their own interior door panels? What did you use? How did they turn out?
i personally think $750 for a set of repop panels is ridiculous.

Some vendors used to sell interior door 'skins'. These were thin, overlay surfaces that were glued to the original panel (after some surface repairs were completed). They were very affordable; but they were an absolute PITA to install properly. I actually recovered my door panels with skins about 12 years ago. It took a lot of thought, planning, and LOTS of patience (something I have in limited supply). After two full days of sweat, work, and with some occasional cursing, the panels were finished. I would give myself a B+ on how they turned out....no glaring defects, but not as smooth as a new door panel.

However, I still have the original door panels in my car; and they look one heckuva lot better than the cracked, torn panels I started with. At the time, new panels were about $200 each, and skins were about $75 per pair. Going into it, I thought that was a good financial choice. Afterwards?....not so much. Lots of grief and angst for a solid two days. Pretty sure I would NOT do that again. And I don't know if anyone sells the skins, anymore.

I think Al Knoch may offer a service, recovering original door panels. The substrate has to be in good condition, rather pricey, but you would have your originals.
Give them a call if you're interested.

I just bought a pair of paper substrate backed panels as were originals, not plastic, even more expensive.
Did a quick test fit, not perfect but workable.
I'll install them next spring after painting.

You could buy the bare door panels and just transfer the trim. They would run you 224.00 ea side plus shipping if you use the sale code on the front of our site. This would be way cheaper and really isn't all that hard to do and it will save you time, money, and the grief of trying to install a skin.

If you want to find them on the site use the picture below from the front page. Enter the year, then the color in the search box and hit search. It'll generate a list for you on the left then select door panel. If you can't find them just message back with what color your interior is.
