Mine is loose, not the fiberglass housing but the mirror itself, seems like the cables inside are the problem. The door panel is off, and I will be replacing it. I'd really prefer to do away with the remote, can I do that without replacing the whole mirror? The car was recently painted.
Whats loose? The sport mirror? Between the stanchon and mirror housing? Or to the car...not sure what year but 79 came loose ..removed..left cables, locktite and rescrewed..watch out that gasket is directional!
pretty sure the housings are die cast but not sure your year

Mine is a '74, I just assumed the mirror housing was fiberglass but maybe it is diecast aluminum. It is painted the same color as the rest of the car, but I didn't personally do the body work, my helpers at work did. The glass part is flopping around, the wires inside are loose, maybe that's because the door panel is off? I'd rather do away with the remote mirror, It's right there why does it need remote? Unnecessary complexity. I just got the car back on the road after 3 years, lots to sort out.
Are these Sport Mirrors? Not sure with no pictures. The glass on the Sport Mirror is bonded to a backing plate which has molded in clip receivers for the pivot trunnion. You should be able to pull the backing plate out from the mirror shell and the pivot trunnion will disengage. The mirror shell looks to be a hydro formed cup. The base is a cast pig iron. The mirror mount that sits inside the shell is an assembly of plastic and pig iron parts. So the base screws to the mirror mount assembly, the shell being sandwiched between. So if the shell is loose on the base you will have to remove the entire mirror of the door to get to those two screws. If it is the glass, then pull it out and see what is broken. I suspect the trunnion is broken or the clips that hold it are broken. Hope this is off some help to you.
