Default Steering Wheel Leaking?

I have a 73 Convertible with a stock steering wheel that looks to be in very good condition. There is a brown substance that is “Leaking” at the bottom of the metal spoke where it meets the vinyl/black material. I clean it off, and it returns after a week or so, seems to be worse in summer, but still “leaks” during colder weather. This steering wheel may have been reconditioned,

Brown looking stuff where metal spoke meets black vinyl/rubber

The brown stuff is “leaking” on the front and back side of the metal spoke
because there are no cuts, scrapes, or splits. Just wanted to know if anyone else has this problem. The wheel is such good shape, I hate to change it. Thanks in advance.

The steering wheel on my 73 has done the same thing. I think it is the adhesive either breaking down or melting because of the heat. Mine was in the summer when the temp was close to 100. I just use a cheap microfiber and keep wiping it off. Seems to have stopped.

The brown stuff is only “leaking” on the bottom spoke, which is the one that is Vertical when the car is parked (wheels straight ahead).

Mine does the same darn thing on the 69. I think condensation gets in there and could be rusting it, because it smells like rust. I clean it and spray WD40 which helps for a while but it always comes back!

I think an oil base product, or something like wd-40 or even Armorall will only make matters worse. When you wipe off the goop, use some denatured alcohol. That will help dry it out. It would appear that some liquid product has been sprayed on there in the past and the heat just brings it back to the surface. Try the alcohol, but not the kind you drink.

Hello
I think it is some element breaking down over time and "outgassing" or changing state. After 30-40 years the material may be breaking down. And with the steering wheel usually parked in the same position, whatever semi liquid is in the steering wheel will eventually gravitate toward the bottom. That's my unscientific explanation of what is happening.
