68 supports are one year only. You may have to use the support for the model year of the hood you installed.

OK I didn't know that was another 68 only item. Do the original hoods come with a number stamp anywhere? Wondering if someone knows difference in length. Thanks Easy Mike

Phil,

I did the same and had to get a new hood support. Contact Steve at SOCALVETTES as he has a few available. 619-670-7878

Hoods don't usually have a part number "stamped" in them. While I have seen some GM hoods with molded in numbers, if they're there, they're usually on the backside of the hood's bonded on reinforcement, and/or on the skin, under the reinforcement.

What type of hood did you install? Is it a 68-72 small block, 68-72 big block, aftermarket long L-88 hood to eliminate the wiper grill and door, stock 73-79 long hood, etc, it might help to know? I'm guessing you have a later or aftermarket hood, since 68-72 hoods are pretty much the same.

There were 5 different hood supports used between 68 and 82. There was a 68, a 69-71, a 72-73 first design, a second design 73-76, and a 77-82. The only difference I know of between the 68, and the 69-71, is that the 68 had 2 lower mounting brackets, with an extra, single mounting hole in the smaller bracket, while the 69-71 only had just the single longer bracket, with 2 mounting holes. Both supports were the telescoping type. The 72-73 and the 73-76 are folding supports, with the only difference between the two types is the number of holes in the base. The 72-73 has 2 holes, while the 73-76 has a single, long slotted hole. The 77-82 has the same slotted lower bracket, as the 73-76 support, but a two piece top bracket, where it bolts to the hood. I don't know the difference in lengths between the different year hood supports, and the Corvette Parts Books don't give any dimensions.

I don't think the 69-71 support will help you at all, since by 1971, Chevrolet had discontinued the 68 only support, and was selling the 69-71 as the service replacement for the 68.

If you're going to try a different support, I would guess your best bet is the 72-73 early one. It should bolt to your hood, and the 2 holes in the base, should line up with the two mounting holes you have in your inner fender skirt. But without seeing it, or knowing what hood you have, this is just a guess.
