I have a ‘68 and at some point somebody replaced the ‘68 rear with a ‘69 or newer so it does not have the reverse lights in the lower part. I have sourced a ‘68 original and I want to swap it out and then paint to match. Has anyone ever done this before?

Essentially, it's bolt in. Do you have the assembly instruction manual (AIM)? The AIM shows the installation (including the back up lights) and lists the parts you will need.
I have the AIM but I guess I need to be more specific. Do I just take an exacto knife and cut throught the paint to remove? What do I use to fill the gap again? Is there a preferred bonding agent?
Yep. I see it now. Looks like the PO did not do you any favors. If it were me, I believe I would begin work on the back side of the panel to assess the best way to get it off the car.
So I actually looked at another car today and I can see that the panel is technically not supposed to be bonded in. I assumed it was supposed to be since mine was. Guess Ill have to do some cutting.
