Default Fabricating L88 hood

Still in the planning stages on my project 1972 Base model. I will be going to an L88 style hood for hood clearance so I can run a decent intake manifold for the planned Big Block swap. I was wondering if anyone had ever bonded a L88 scoop on to a flat hood and how it turned out. If I were to do it I would make it functional so I realize that there would be cutting and body work involved and that doesn't bother me. The only reason that I'm considering it is that I don't know what I would do with the stock hood. I see plenty advertised on CL for around $300.00 probably from people upgrading to the L88 style and I noticed that they are listed for a long time so there probably isn't a huge demand for the stock hood. Of course if I did do it I wouldn't want it to look like a hack job. So I was just seeing if anyone has had experience doing it or has seen an example.I didn't post in paint and body since I'm not sure if I want to go this route. Thank You in advance

Just talk to JD and get a new Carbon Fiber L88 hood......or something....Molding the original hood into a scab on scoop is a lousy way to go. You save no money, time is spent for dubious gain, and at the end, nobody would buy it or keep it.

Here is a good deal, although I would definitely get the one with the airbox....

Thank you. I am leaning towards the after market long hood since I can delete the wiper door also. Just kicking around the idea.

I have two aftermarket L88 long hoods for sale. I am far from Washington state, so shipping would be ridiculous, but if interested, I am selling both of them.

Yes shipping always factors. When I make a decision I will check with you and see if you have them available. Thank you

Rookie here: I try to do as much DIY as possible on my project car, but I'm guessing you will spent up to $200 on all supplies to modify a hood...and 40+ hours to "get the bodywork right"...plus the cost of a used hood.

I've read here several times that hoods can be shipped using Greyhound for smaller money than other methods.

I've been following your wonderful thread for years and you have my respect for many reasons. Your trials and tribulations both during and after the war. You have faced things that would put most people down and push through. I know that you don't feel like it at times but your strength inspires all of us here. The next thing that I respect is the fiberglass work that you have done on your '68. You are far from a rookie. Which brings me to the final point that has helped me. When I look at a project that gives me the choice of building vs. buying I mentally pay myself $20 an hour to build.. If the price is over what it would cost to buy then I buy. We are right on the edge but with the benefit of deleting the wiper door and the fact that I will have plenty of other body work to do on the car. I think that my decision is made. Now to save up the money. Thank you all who posted. More are welcome to comment.

I did think of Greyhound. I also work for a shipping company and might be able to get a discount to make it worthwhile but the size is the main draw back

If the stock hood doesn't fit well (gaps, "duckbill" in the front) just get another hood.......I put mine in the backyard to cut a hole in if I ever go tunnel ram LOL.
I also recommend using the short L-88 hood as IMHO...it works better and looks a thousand times better than the long one.....long L-88 hood scoop is just too long....kinda ruins the aesthetics for me....the wiper door system is cool and classy to me.....keep it. Also...I put the factory style air chamber in this and I like it.....works good. The air clener is up in the hole getting cooler air.....the long L-88 scoop is not as good in this regard.....
The hood is an ACI and the airbox is Eckler's (ACI does not make an air chamber for their own hood for some reason).

This makes me glad that I asked: Real world experience. The stock hood fits well and your comment about the tunnel ram brings up another idea that I've had in the back of my mind. I've always loved the look of the 8 stack fuel injection and would love to have it. I will then be able to justify the keeping of the stock hood for that reason since I would have to cut the hood for clearance of the stacks. However that will be a project for another time since I don't wish to get too bogged down in "project Hell" by not having a running driving car for too long. And your comment about the wiper flaps made me think about deleting it. I see a lot advertised but don't sell. And I hate to waste a good part(s). Sigh...more to think about lol. This isn't my first car build but it is my first Corvette and I'm thankful for this forum to be able to exchange ideas. Edit: Thank you for the tip on ACI Jebbysan again it's always good to get real world experience. I will also be using the air box when the car will be finished
