Default Gear Indicator 71 Automatic

Just putting my centre console back together and have come across an issue with the clear plastic indicator. When I install it on top of the silver light housing that is behind the clear plastic indicator the letters disappear. I think it should be black to show a contrast with the letters, but after a fair bit of searching I cannot locate any pictures of those particular parts. Anyone had theirs apart that would shed some light on my issue....thanks.... and the plastic indicator in the picture is being replaced.

I thought mine (72) had a black plate that went between them. I went digital so I have the original ones here somewhere, I'll check

Checked and mine is the same, silver on the inside (black on the outside but I painted it) and there is a thin, black metal plate that went between the plastic indicator and the silver housing. Kind of like the one for the Heater control. Light was supposed to shine through the edge of the plastic piece with the prndl on it

I agree. The black is below the pastic letter plate. The light comes in thru the sides of that clear plastic lens and illuminate the pale greenish letters/numbers. Shiny side DOWN, in this case....

Guys....thanks for the input....kind of confirms my suspicions....Once I get my new indicator plate I am going to manufacture a plate similar to the one on the heater control and do a bit of experimenting. I’m surprised the vendors don’t have any of these pieces unless, I am missing something.

I'll see if I can find mine and take some pictures of it. It's around here somewhere I kept the whole shifter insert in case I ever wanted to change back
I did a quick look at the suppliers and didn't see one available, keen at least shows it existing (their drawings are better than a lot)

Norm,
You need this black backing plate to fit between the lens and the light bulb housing.

Ok figured it out.....all attempts to find the parts on any vendors website was negative....so after some of your suggestions Here is what I ended up doing.....I located a black plastic separator out of a regular binder. I cut it to fit the back of the indicator plate including a little hole to secure it in place.....

And....”Bobs yur Uncle”.....worked perfect...

And now now I wait for the new plate.

I still haven't managed to locate mine, found the box with the plate, lens, light housing, ashtray, tracks, etc but I can't lay my hands on the two sliders for the auto shifter and this blackout piece on the lens. Getting old sucks (beats the alternative I guess)
