Years ago I had to remove the duct piece for heat from under drivers side dash to do some work, and when duct was removed the pictured plastic disc fell out. When I removed the circular AC vent in the duct, the disc was a perfect match to the cut hole. So my theory is all cars came down the line as non- AC cars and when AC was installed they cut the holes on the line, thus the disc laying in the ductwork since Oct of 68. Just a theory..........
That is what that looks like, and I would agree with your theory in this case. The disk looks like what is left over after using a circlular bit to cut out the hole.
The non-A/C cars did NOT get that duct installed. The cut-out disc was mistakenly left inside your duct when shipped to the factory. Typical 'shoddy' workmanship of the 1970's....

So I revisited the 69 AIM, and on pg C60-A7 it shows the duct pieces installation. So they are AC only apparently. Now on pg 1ASM-M5, the side ball vent is shown and straps to the plenum?!?!?! Assuming that is the side kick panel vent area???? So they didn't have duct pieces going to them when non AC, correct?!?!?!?! Thanks.........
